The Caspian Last Nomads

The Talesh mountain belt is a region in northwest Iran and the southwest of the Caspian Sea. The distinct language, culture, and traditions of this land have been preserved over millennia by its people, including nomadic, semi-nomadic, and pastoralists. For decades, isolation has been a significant factor for the inhabitants of this land. However, over the past decade, this region has been affected by some drivers, such as immigration, discrimination against women, severe shortage of access to healthcare services, the climate change crisis and land use change, mainly for construction purposes.

Nowadays, many Talesh families have been forced to move to other areas as migrants, and many villages are now on the verge of emptiness. Nomadic Taleshians have left their ancestral lifestyle to move to lowlands to work seasonal jobs to make a living. As a result, this wonderful mountainous area with unique traditions and charming nature is experiencing the last days of its lifestyle and the last generations of itself.
